Mayotte

The southernmost island in the Comoros archipelago, Mayotte is a relatively short hop from Madagascar and although now a French overseas département, where the currency is the Euro and baguettes and cafés are part of the culture, it feels more African than the other Comoros islands.

Mayotte’s most remarkable natural feature is a vast coral-fringed lagoon: paddling about in its calm waters feels like exploring a giant aquarium. The island’s 100km hiking trail offers glimpses of maki lemurs, roussette flying foxes and magnificent wild orchids. . .
