Sudan

Sudan is the most frustrating, beguiling country in Africa. You will encounter monumental volumes of bureaucracy and procrastination, and permit and transport delays can upset the best-laid plans. Just as you finalize some arrangement, you hear that a bridge is down, a ferry out of action or a road waist-deep in mud. Don’t worry, you’ll be told, you’ll soon be on your way, insh’Allah – if God wills it. . .

Khartoum – the biggest city in North Africa after Cairo, and reckoned one of the safest on the continent – lies at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles. It consists of the twentieth-century city, the expanding industrial suburb of Bahari and the old capital of Omdurman, with its enormous, noisy souk. . .
